Recommended Materials for Online Art Therapy Sessions

Here is a list of art materials one may want to have on hand for Art Therapy sessions as well as individual art-making. I am NOT affiliated with any of the links provided, nor do I receive any financial incentive or benefit from the sharing of these links.

Surfaces

  • White Drawing Paper (9"x12")- at least 50 sheets loose or in a sketchbook
  • Assorted Color Construction Paper (9"x12", fade-resistant)
  • Mixed Media Pad or spiral bound Sketchbook (9"x12")- for use with wet media such as paint, markers, collage, watercolors
  • Large Drawing Paper or Mixed Media Drawing Pad (14"x17" or 18"x24")
  • Cardboard boxes, Paper Bags, Butcher Paper, Parchment Paper, 
  • Canvas (stretched frames or canvas boards)
  • Masonite Boards
  • Wood
  • Shoe or small gift boxes

Drawing

  • Oil Pastels/Cray-pas (multi-color set)
  • Colored Pencils, Watercolor Pencils (multi-color set)
  • Drawing Pencils and Eraser (Standard 2B pencil is fine)
  • Colored Markers (multi-color set)
  • Assorted drawing charcoal

Painting

  • Gesso (primer paint for multiple surfaces, incl. paper, wood & fabric)
  • Watercolor Paints (multi-color dry pan palette or liquid)
  • Acrylic paints (White, Black, Red, Yellow, & Blue minimum)
  • Assorted Paint brushes (for Acrylic and Watercolor)

Adhering

  • Glue Sticks, White glue, or Yes Paste
  • Mod Podge (Use asd glue and sealant/top coat- comes in different finishes)
  • Acrylic Medium (Works the same as Mod Podge)
  • Tapes (Masking tape, Washi tape, double-stick tape, Duct tape, Artist's tape)

Sculpting

  • Air-Dry Clays (can be painted or colored with markers when dry)
  • Paper Clay or Papîer-maché (paper pulp mixed with water and flour or glue)
  • Modeling Clay (does not dry, can be re-formed multiple times)

Collage

  • Magazine images
  • Newspaper pages
  • Paper Scraps (gift wrap, packaging labels, textured papers)
  • Fabric, Yarn, string, ribbon
  • Tapes (Washi tapes, Duct tape)
